The Power of Twitter

People are coming together on Twitter from all interest groups, including teachers! Teaching is very much about engaging as an active member of a community, and teachers collaborating on Twitter to share their resources and offer one another support.
Although Twitter can be seen as merely mindless amusement, teachers can use use it as an opportunity for personal, professional development. For instance, Twitter holds scheduled "chats" for teachers to participate in on a weekly basis.
EdChat essentially allows for anyone to participate in education discussions to any extend they desire. Here, they can discuss, debate, explore, reflect, and act on various topics and issues that revolve around education.

Having people come together from such diverse environments and experiences gives this Twitter community a richer experience. As all educators know, a worldly experience is the best experience. We must come together, starting with the individual, in order to make a positive global impact--140 characters at a time.

  1. Twitter is a great way of using communication between teachers. This is a great way for teachers to share ideas that they have and to collaborate with one another. I think that we would benefit greatly from sharing ideas with teachers from all over the world, to see what works for different groups of children.

  2. Social networking sites are a great way to connect with other teachers and learn new techniques and activities to share with students. As teachers we sometimes have creative blocks and it is nice to have ideas from other teachers to spark creativity in ourselves. We can share what does and does not work with children and how to make adaptations and modifications to include all learners. Social networking is a great way for teachers to collaborate and share information.

  3. I really like how teachers interact on Twitter, but I think it is definitely not enough. That word limit does limit thoughts and real discussion could be tiring and awkward. I actually prefer more open forums such as Facebook or forums because you can write as much as you want and it is still very easy to access at any time. Posting snippets is still useful, though.
